Poetical convention of Pannatti as denoted by the Tholkaappiyam

Abstract

Pannathi is a genre denoted by Tholkappiam. Tholkappiar while listing down the seven types of Yaappu, viz., Poem, Text, Book, Oral Language, Pisi, Angatham, Muthu Sol, in continuation refers to the genre called Pannathi. This genre is found in various branches of literature by people like Nachinaarkiniyar. This genre has no specific norms. Mostly it occurs as an interlude in the main place of literature. The meaning of this genre is likened to music and is based on musical notations. This goes with the main theme of literature, having similar nature of literature and inclination towards music. Also this genre has been used mostly by musicians of the folklore tradition. This paper analysis the various features of the genre called Pannathi.

ஆய்வுச்சுருக்கம்

பண்ணத்தி தொல்காப்பியம் சுட்டும் இலக்கிய வடிவங்களுள் ஒன்று. பாட்டு, உரை, நூல், வாய்மொழி, பிசி, அங்கதம், முதுசொல் எனும் ஏழு வடிவங்களையும் யாப்பின் வழியில் உரைத்த தொல்காப்பியர் இதனூடே பண்ணத்தி வடிவத்தையும் விளக்குகிறார். இவ்வடிவமைப்பு நச்சினார்க்கினியரின் நூற்பாவிலும் உள்ளது. இந்த வடிவம் அடிவரையறையில்லாதது. பொதுவாக இவ்வடிவம் பாட்டிடை வரும் இலக்கணமாகவே உள்ளது. இவ்வடிவமானது இசையோடு தொடர்பும் இசைக் குறியீட்டை அடிப்படையாகவும் கொண்டமைந்தது. பண்ணத்தி வடிவமானது பாட்டிடைக் கலந்த பொருளை உடையது, பாட்டின் இயல்பினைக் கொண்டது, பண்ணை விருப்புவது. இவ்வடிவம் மிக அதிகமாகப் பாரம்பரிய இசைக்கலையில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இக்கட்டுரையானது பண்ணத்தி வடிவமைப்பு குறித்த பல்வேறு அம்சங்களை ஆய்வு செய்வதாக அமைகிறது.
