The King and People in People’s Epic

Abstract

Silapathiharam is a standing example for the Artistic excellence of the ancient tamils. This is called People’s epic. There was not People’s republic in the age of Silapathiharam. There was only the rule of the Kings. They were some kings who gave better government and some did not. But the people considered kings who gave good government in high esteem. They went further to worship such good kings as gods. Just like ministers today take part in public functions, the kings of the past attended in going around the cith and participated in marriages. There was a perfect relation between kings and people. The kings looked into the welfare of the people, public relations, Religion, making the country cool even in summer, respecting the public and patrronising even animals. This Paper proves into how the kings of yester years concentrated in the activities cited above.

ஆய்வுச் சுருக்கம்:

தொன்மைத் தமிழரின் கலைச் சிறப்பிற்கு ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாகத் திகழ்வது சிலப்பதிகாரமாகும். இக்காப்பியம் குடிமக்கள் காப்பியம் என்றும் போற்றப்படும். “குடிமக்கள் காப்பியத்தில் மக்களும் அரசரும்” என்னும் தலைப்பில் ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்ட போது சிலப்பதிகார காலத்தில் தமிழகத்தில் மக்கள் ஆட்சி இல்லை. மன்னர்கள் ஆட்சிதான் நிலவியிருந்தது. மன்னர்களுக்கு எல்லா அதிகாரங்களுமுண்டு. ஆயினும் நீதி முறையுடன் ஆளும் மன்னர்கள்தான் மக்களால் மதிக்கப்பட்டனர். ஆறநெறி தவறாமல் ஆள வேண்டும். நாட்டு மக்களுக்கு எவ்வித இடையூரும் இல்லாமல் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு அரசாளும் மன்னர்களையே மக்கள் அனைவரும் தெய்வமாகக் கருதினர். அவ்வகையில் இன்றைய காலத்தில் அரசாட்சி செய்யும் முதல்வர்கள் மக்களுடைய திருவிழாக்களில் கலந்து கொள்ளுதல், போலவே சிலப்பதிகார காலத்தில் மன்னர்கள் மக்கள் தொடர்பு, உறவு, ஈடுபாடு, நம்பிக்கை, உதவிமனப்பான்மை, நகர்வலம் வருதல், நாட்டில் தொழில் வளர்ச்சி, இறைவழிபாடு, வேனிற்காலத்திலும் குளுமையான ஆட்சி, மணவிழாவுக்கு வருதல், நாடு நலம் காணுதல், மக்களை மதித்த மாண்பு, மக்களை மட்டுமன்றிப் பிற உயிரினங்களையும் போற்றி உயர்வு முதலான நற்குணங்களில் அரசர்கள் இருந்ததை பின்வரும் கட்டுரையில் விரிவாக அறியலாம்.
