Abstract

The Silappathikaram was revived since Vijaya Nagara Nayakkar period contemporary situations. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka the story of the Kannaki has been revived according to its local environment and culture. During the Vijaya Nagara Nayakkar period in Tamil Nadu the story of the Silappathikaram become a ballad called ‘Kovalan Kathai’. Later, a number of ballads such as Kovalan Karnaki Kathai, Kovilan Sariththiram, Karnaki Mathanalki Kovilar Kathai emerged in Tamil Nadu.

All these ballads created Kannaki the goddess of Saivism.  In the Kovilan story, Kannaki is structured as a form of goddess Thurkka and as a goddess Kali to avenge the King Pandian. In addition, these stories have been created as a collection of region cases and traditions of the Peoples of the land in which the originated. These revivals have been made of mythical legends. In the Kannaki Vazhakurai which originated in Sri Lanka, The story has been fabricated the sprite called Namankalai comes in the form of a mango and She births as a goddess Kannaki. Its alternate forms, the Kovalanar Kathai and Silampukural are presented that goddess Kali comes in the form of mankani (mango) and she births as a goddess Kannaki. These Sri Lankan Texts were created for the sake of Kannaki ritual.

The Kappal vaiththa (Shipping) Kathai and Kadaloddu (diving) Kathai of Kannaki Vazhakurai tells about the myth of Sri Lanka. Kadaloddu Kathai tells about the story of a Vediyarasan. This story reveals eminence of the history of a community (particularly caste) of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
