Abstract

The literature component in language subjects plays a crucial role in fostering an appreciation and love for the language among students. Additionally, literature lessons guide students to think critically and creatively. However, previous studies have shown that students in Tamil schools at the primary level lack interest and participation in the teaching and learning activities of Tamil literature, which hinders their ability to fully grasp and appreciate its value. This situation suggests a need for improvement in teaching and learning methods.The Fourth Industrial Revolution encourages the use of digital technology in teaching and learning activities. In this era of globalization, integrating gamification into learning is one of the new approaches. Gamification is a method that combines the content of 21st-century teaching and learning with elements of game mechanics. It makes learning enjoyable while also encouraging higher-order thinking. Teachers are increasingly using free online gamification tools such as Kahoot, Wordwall, and Quizziz in teaching and learning activities. This study explores how gamification is being used in teaching and learning, and how it motivates students to acquire and enhance their skills. The qualitative research method is employed in this study, where relevant research papers, books, and articles are selected, and data is collected through descriptive methods. Based on this approach, previous studies have shown that gamification strategies are effective in fully engaging students in the teaching and learning activities of the literature component in Tamil language subjects, thereby improving their performance.
