The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Tamil Language Development In Malaysia: A Quantitative Study

Abstract

Despite widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), many firms struggle to convert AI-enabled capabilities into sustained Artificial intelligence-based language learning environments are increasingly creating significant transformations in modern education and communication methods, particularly in the development of the Tamil language. As the influence of such technologies continues to grow in the language usage and proficiency development of Indian Tamils living in Malaysia, it becomes essential to examine their usefulness and effectiveness. Specifically, an important question arises as to how users experience artificial intelligence tools and how these experiences are reflected in their self-language proficiency development. This study investigates the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, cultural and linguistic appropriateness, and learning motivation and interest and self-language proficiency among Indians living in Malaysia. A total of 181 participants were involved in this study, and quantitative analysis, descriptive statistics, and regression analysis were employed. Based on descriptive statistics, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and learning motivation were rated at moderate to positive levels. In contrast, cultural and linguistic appropriateness was rated relatively lower. The results of the regression analysis confirm that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and particularly learning motivation and interest have a significant positive impact on self-language proficiency. Among these, learning motivation and interest emerged as the strongest predictor. On the other hand, cultural and linguistic appropriateness did not show a statistically significant effect. Overall, this study highlights that user-cantered factors play a crucial role in artificial intelligence-based language learning experiences. In particular, when perceived usefulness, ease of use, and learning motivation work together, users’ self-language proficiency tends to improve. Therefore, it is essential to design future artificial intelligence tools in a way that enhances simplicity, usefulness, and user engagement. Through this, the learning and development of the Tamil language can be further strengthened.
