Abstract

The Sangam classical text Ciṟupāṇāṟṟuppaṭai serves as a vital resource for understanding the prominence of the Chera, Chola, and Pandya dynasties, collectively known as the Mūvēntar, who were the esteemed rulers of ancient Tamil Nadu. This text not only highlights the grandeur of these three great crowned kings but also sheds light on the benevolence of the lesser-known local rulers, referred to as the last seven patrons (Kaṭaiyeḻu Vaḷḷalkaḷ). Moreover, it provides insights into the remarkable musical artistry of the Pāṇar during the Sangam period, illustrating the cultural richness of the time. The text also offers a glimpse into the geographical landscape of ancient Tamil Nadu, the patrons’ appreciation for artistic talent, and the renowned hospitality that characterised Tamil society during this era. In addition, it reflects on the historical significance of generosity, a core value among the Tamils of the Sangam period. Through these various themes, this research article posits that the Ciṟupāṇāṟṟuppaṭai is instrumental in deepening our understanding of the history and culture of the Tamils during the Sangam era.
