Associate Professor Dr Samikkanu Jabamoney’s Contribution to Malaysian Tamil Education A Case Study

Abstract

This article aims to explore the life history and contributions of the esteemed Associate Professor Dr. Samikkanu Jabamoney Ishak Samuel, who played a significant role in the long-standing growth of Tamil education. The study is designed using a qualitative approach. The data for this research were collected through interviews, and the findings were analysed as a case study. Associate Professor Dr. Samikkanu Jabamoney was a prominent figure in Tamil education. Beginning his career as a Tamil teacher in 1983, he pioneered initiatives such as the ‘Valar Tamil Vizha’ and ‘Tamil Literature Festival’, which cultivated students’ interest in language and literature. He established undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Tamil language and literature. Associate Professor Dr. Samikkanu Jabamoney authored notable works such as ‘The History of Tamil Education in Malaysia’ and ‘The Growth of Tamil Poetry in Malaysia’. In 2014, he introduced a program to encourage writing research theses in Tamil. He also launched the ‘Malaysian Tamil Journal, laying a strong foundation for education, culture, and the development of Tamil. Through this study, it becomes evident how Associate Professor Dr. Samikkanu Jabamoney Ishak Samuel’s life and contributions have significantly enriched Tamil education in Malaysia.
