The use of translated materials in the classroom has gained increasing attention as a means to enhance students’ understanding of a second or third language. In the context of Tamil schools in Malaysia, teachers face various challenges when implementing translated materials as a teaching approach in the Tamil language subject. This study aims to examine the types of challenges experienced by teachers, including issues related to the quality of translated materials, time constraints, students’ literacy levels, and the availability of professional support. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews involving 10 Tamil language teachers in primary schools, the findings reveal an urgent need for continuous professional training and the production of translated materials that are more contextual and appropriate for students’ age levels. The study’s implications extend to education policy, teacher training institutions, and teaching material providers, emphasising the importance of culturally and linguistically relevant resources. Overall, the findings highlight that while translated materials can be an effective pedagogical tool, their success depends greatly on quality, teacher competency, and institutional support.
