The commentaries and the exegetical methods employed by the commentators have played a pivotal role in the enduring legacy and the widespread study of Tolkappiyam. In this regard, seven commentaries are extant recognized as the "ancient commentaries" of Tolkappiyam authored by Ilampuranar, Senavaraiyar, Nachinarkkiniyar, Perasiriyar, Deivachilaiyar, Kalladanar, and an anonymous commentator. Among these, the Sollathikaram (the section on words/morphology) is unique in having six major commentaries. Of these, the commentary by Senavarayar holds a special distinction and merits extensive scholarly study. The subject of this article is the specific manner in which he cites Thirukkural within his commentary.
