Abstract

This research "The Impact of Social Media on Learning Activities among Students in Department of Indian Studies, University of Malaya", investigates how students use social media for academic purposes and its influence on their learning. The research aims to identify the most frequently used platforms, examine usage patterns, and determine the impact on academic performance. Driven by the increasing role of digital tools in education, a quantitative research method was applied using a structured survey distributed among students. Data were analyzed using Jamovi software. The study is grounded in the Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT), which helps explain how students actively choose social media to fulfill academic and social needs. Key findings revealed popular platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram supported academic communication, while overuse caused distraction and time mismanagement. The research achieved its objectives and offers practical insights to enhance students’ learning engagement through balanced and mindful social media use.
