Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of multilingual learning on the academic performance among Indian students of secondary schools in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. Conducted under the framework of ‘Translation Theory’ (2014), this research specifically analyzes how students navigate multilingual challenges within school environments that involve Tamil, Malay, and English languages. The data for this study were collected through interviews with 14 Indian students from seven different secondary schools in Ipoh, Perak. Although Indian students face challenges such as language confusion in the classroom and unequal language proficiency levels, they also experience several benefits. To overcome multilingual challenges, students adopt various learning strategies, including the use of translation practices and artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini AI, and Copilot. Additionally, temples and volunteer organizations function as informal language learning centers. These findings contribute to the limited body of literature on the experiences of Indian students within the context of multilingual education and provide practical guidance for educators and policymakers to further strengthen multilingual learning.
